Amy Friend’s latest work, “Firelight,” is an exquisite collection of reimagined vintage photographs from the 1920s to the 1940s, published by L’Artiere. The book is presented in a unique blue box, reflecting its theme of illumination and renewal. The collection, named “Dare alla Luce,” uses delicate perforations and backlighting to bring a magical, ethereal quality to the images, encouraging reflection on time and memory.

Friend is a Canadian artist known for her innovative approach to photography, which often merges personal and collective histories. Her work has been exhibited internationally and featured in numerous prestigious publications. In “Firelight,” Friend uses found photographs from markets and online sources, alongside personal images of lost family members, creating a universal family album.

The book’s design incorporates French binding and laser-cut paper, emphasizing the interplay of light and shadow. It includes a text by curator Laura Serani and was crafted in collaboration with designer Gianni Giulianelli. Friend’s artistic process draws from her own experiences and heritage, often incorporating elements like salt water to evoke memory and transformation in her work. “Firelight” continues her exploration of photography as a mutable, transcendent art form.
