Rep. Valerie Foushee (D-NC) has received substantial backing from the Jobs and Democracy PAC, tied to AI model designer Anthropic, to bolster her re-election campaign in the Fourth Congressional District against Durham County commissioner Nida Allam. This intervention includes nearly $700,000 from Anthropic’s super PAC and an additional $250,000 from a mysterious group linked to Democratic leadership. This influx of financial support aligns with Public First’s broader aims—an organization advocating for measured AI regulation.

Public First head and former Rep. Brad Carson (D-OK) is connected to the “AI safety” movement that opposes unchecked AI development. Anthropic has contributed $20 million to this effort, with Public First seeking to raise a total of $75 million. Despite conflict concerns, Foushee benefits as two-thirds of the Democratic leadership on AI policy receive backing from AI firms, Foushee included. Opponent Allam matches her in candidate fundraising, buoyed by progressive endorsements and substantial outside funding, notably from the American Priorities PAC.

Foushee faces scrutiny over support from the AI sector, especially with a controversial data center proposed for her district. Meanwhile, Allam campaigns against this development, emphasizing the local impact on electricity costs, which she dubs an “AI tax.” As Public First engages both Democratic and Republican races, Foushee contends with constituents mobilizing against AI industry influence.
